June 17, 2007 (We are open for business as usual)
Lompoc, California, A recent news article in the paper reported that
Ocean Lanes was going to close soon and the building torn down by
December 2007. An out of state developer has submitted plans for review
to the city of Lompoc planning department for a proposal for 80 unit
complex for the elderly. The reason behind this action is to gain tax
credits that investors can use to lower taxes.
Ocean Lanes is open and plans to continue operations for a long time.
The planning process, if approved would take years before any ground
would be broken.
If the bowling center was to move, that would require 2.5 acres of
land, at least a 28,000 to 35,000 square foot building, and
dismantling, moving, installing equipment and recertification of the
center. Land cost runs about $10.00 to $11.00 per square foot, building
cost at least $100.00 a square foot, and the moving of the equipment at
least $1.5 million dollars. Ocean Lanes is a 24 lane bowing center.
Bowling center cost start at about $100,000.00 per lane for the current
state of the art design. A new center would cost between $5 million to
$6.5 million and would not be economical.
It is suggested for the customers of Ocean Lanes Bowling to keep right on bowing at the center and keep bowling in Lompoc.
